How to Prepare a Room for Painting

Whether you’re painting one wall or an entire room, it’s safe to say that the preparation sometimes takes longer than the DIY itself! To help you prepare a room for painting quickly and easily, we’ve created a helpful guide from the experts at Top Tower.

Move all furniture and soft furnishings

The last thing you want is for your favourite sofa to get stained with flecks of paint! This is frustrating, but you’ll be pleased to know that it’s easy to avoid. To minimise the risk of any furnishings getting damaged or stained, all you need to do is move any non-fixed furnishings out of the room. If there are furnishings that you can’t move, cover them with a dust sheet for extra protection.

Cover the floor with a protective sheet

Covering the floor before you begin is especially important if the room in question is fitted with a gorgeous fluffy carpet! However, protecting hardwood flooring is just as necessary. Paint can be difficult to get off wooden floors, and whether you’re painting your own room or a customer’s, you’ll want to avoid this issue altogether. With this in mind, make sure you protect the floor by using a heavy dust sheet. You should also lay newspaper under your painting equipment, just in case.

Tape the skirting boards

With painter’s tape, cover the skirting boards, window frames and any other mouldings in the room. The tape will protect the skirting boards and other mouldings from any paint that drips from the walls or your paintbrush. Doing this also means that you can paint right down to the skirting boards without leaving gaps or smudging paint onto the boards themselves.

Prepare your painting equipment

Making sure you have all the necessary painting equipment for the job to hand is the golden rule of painting efficiently. You don’t want to keep climbing up and down the painting ladder to grab a new pot of paint or paintbrush from the garage; not only is this a waste of time, but it also increases the risk of accidents. Make sure you have everything you need in front of you to save time and increase efficiency.

Choose the right painter’s steps

The ladder you use will depend on the job at hand, so think carefully about your requirements before hiring or buying painter’s steps. You may need one that extends, or perhaps you’d benefit from a multi-purpose ladder that lets you reach the trickiest spots in the room. Either way, it’s best to discuss your requirements with reputable ladder and tower suppliers to ensure you source the best equipment for the job.

Don’t forget to invest in ladder accessories, too. Accessories such as ladder pads will stop the metal from scratching any surface it’s up against and ladder stoppers can help the base from sliding on the floor.
