Working as an electrician you have to be wary of a lot of potential hazards. One aspect in particular is the safe use of ladders and ensuring you are using the right type for the job.
There are many different ladders on the market today, but if you are doing electrical work it’s important to pick a non-metal ladder. You should be using a non-conductive material such as wood or fiberglass.
Basic ladder safety
As with all jobs that require ladders, basic safety is important, one wrong move and you could get seriously injured. Before using the ladder, ensure you have level and secure footing, checking the ladder is secure and locking safety arms. It’s also best to check above and below the ladder for any debris or hazards that could complicate the job.
While you’re using the ladder, it’s important to remember not to use the top of the ladder or the step next to the top, and never put yourself in a position where you have to stretch or reach. If you need to get to a higher point, get a taller ladder, or you are much more likely to lose your balance.
It’s always a good idea to get someone to foot the ladder for you and hold the ladder in place, ensuring it won’t topple over as you climb. It also helps to hold the ladder for whoever goes up to tie the ladder off, and the same for the last one down.
Choosing the right ladder
Ladders are made from either wood, aluminium or fiberglass. Aluminium ladders are not safe for electricians because of their ability to conduct electrical currents, causing a safety hazard.
Wooden ladders are safe to use but have a few downsides, such as rotting when exposed to moist conditions and being heavier than both aluminium and fiberglass.
Fiberglass, although more expensive, is a great option because they typically will last much longer and are much safer to use.
You’ll also want to consider whether to use an industrial, commercial or household ladder depending on what you will be using it for and what kind of loads the ladder will need to hold.
Finally, it’s important to remember safety tips such as correct ladder angles and tying off ladders. Remember not to place your ladder too steep or too far away from the work area and always face the ladder when climbing or descending. With all this in mind, you’ll be able to keep yourself safe while working.
