Your New Year Home Maintenance Checklist
Once the festivities are over and you’ve tidied away the last of the Christmas wrapping paper, it’s wise to turn your attention to the structure of your home. During the cold, wet and windy weather of the winter months, the exterior of your home can come under pressure and parts may have fallen off or been damaged. January is the perfect time to find a suitable access solution to take stock of what's happening in your home and budget for any home maintenance work that needs to be done. To help, the experts at Top Towers have put together a short checklist.
Clean Filters and Vents
If your furnace was put to good use over the Christmas period, now is a good time to change the filter. Not only will this improve the air flow to make a stronger, warmer fire to get you through January but it will also improve the air quality in your home. Additionally you should check all the other vents in your home to check that they are free of debris and have a good air flow.
Check Your Roof and Chimney
While you’re storing away all those Christmas decorations into the attic, take a moment to inspect the structure of the roof with a touch. You should look carefully at any exposed beams for wood rot, check the foundations for mould or rot and inspect the chimney for any leaks.
Once you have inspected the inside, you should take a look at the roof on the outside to see if there are any loose tiles or patches of damp that look like they may need repair. When it comes to home maintenance, it's always best to act quickly. The worse the problem becomes, the more costly it will be to fix it. You may need a scaffold tower or ladder to check this properly so it's important that you buy or hire one from a reputable company.
Inspect Your Pipes and Gutters
While you are inspecting the roof, you may also want to have a look at your pipes and gutters. As gutters are often in some proximity to trees, they often tend to become filled with leaves, although these can come from anywhere. The longer the leaves stay in the gutter, the harder they will be to remove. Wet leaves can become mouldy and this can cause serious blockage and damage in the pipes. The weight of too many leaves plus rotting wood may cause your gutters to come away from the wall and spill rain down the front of your house. This can cause costly damage to the brickwork and roofs which are no longer protected.
In the cold winter weather, frozen water expands in the pipes. This can crack or damage pipes and gutters which leads them to be ineffective. It’s likely that you won’t be able to get a proper look at your gutters without some form of access solution. Scaffold towers are by far the safest option, compared to ladders, as they provide a secure base for you to inspect your property from.
