Safe Scaffolding: How to Set Up a One Man Scaffold Tower

If you need to do some DIY work that involves working at height, then it’s important to ensure that you do so safely. Sometimes this means using a mobile scaffold tower, as opposed to a ladder.

Thankfully, you don’t necessarily need to enlist the help of a professional to help set this up for you. By using a one man scaffold tower, you should easily be able to set this up yourself in no time - as long as you do so properly. Read on below as we list the basic steps to setting up a DIY scaffold tower.

1 | Clear the Area

Before building your tower, it’s important to clear the surrounding area to ensure that you have enough space to move around and build it safely and with more ease. Furthermore, you should also create a ‘safe zone’, in which you should have a clear area around your tower in a radius that is at least one metre greater than the finished height of your scaffolding tower.

2 | Connect the Legs

To begin building, you need to insert the castor to the bottom of the attachable legs, before attaching this to the base of the ladder frame. Once in place, you’ll need to lock the castors by pressing down firmly on the braking mechanism, which will also stop the base wheels from being able to move.

3 | Attach the Horizontal Braces

Once the frame and castors have been connected on both ends, you’ll need to connect the two by attaching the horizontal braces. Once you’ve done this, then your mainframe will be erected.

After you’ve got your mainframe, you’ll want to make sure that everything is level. You can do this by using a spirit level to ensure that everything is as straight as possible, adjusting the legs until you’re happy that the tower is stable.

4 | Attach the Platform

With the mainframe built, it’s time to attach the first platform. This should sit on the second rung of your frame, simply hooking on. You will then need to add some diagonal braces on either side, attaching to the first rung then clipping to the third rung.

Following the diagonal braces, two more horizontal braces will need to be attached to both the third and fourth rungs, the same as you did with the first.

5 | Repeat for Height

Congratulations! Your scaffolding tower is complete. Should you want to increase the height of your tower and add more platforms, then simply repeat the aforementioned steps, remembering to add diagonal braces between each new level, as well as adding stabilisers to the bottom of your frame.

Remember, this is just a guide on the basic steps of erecting a one man scaffolding tower; these steps may vary depending on the tower that you buy, so be sure to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and seek the professional advice for guidance if you’re unsure.
