Top Safety Tips For Working at Height

Whether it’s a DIY job or for work, it’s likely that we’ll all have to use a ladder or steps at least once in our lives. From reaching those places that are hard to access to completing work for your clients, it’s important that you have the right sort of equipment and follow the right procedures to ensure everything is safe.

Read on for all you need to know.

Clear the area

Before you start any type of work, especially projects that involve working at height, you need to make sure the area is clear. Remove any potential hazards so the ladder, steps or tower you are using is secure on level ground and when you step down from the platform you won’t be at risk of tripping or falling over anything. You should also ensure that people aren’t working underneath you, just in case you drop any equipment or fall.

Use the right equipment

If you’re unsure about what equipment you need for a job, always get an expert opinion. Using the wrong equipment or ladder means you could find yourself straining to reach the area you’re working on or doing other unsafe practices, however, using the right equipment will support your task and reduce serious injuries.

Wear the right gear

Working at height can be dangerous, but with the right safety gear you can reduce accidents and feel a lot more confident as you complete your work. A helmet, well-gripped shoes, harness and gloves can all provide the support and protection you need. There are many hazards associated with working at height, but equally as many tools that can protect you, so never start a job without the right gear.

Don’t exceed weight limits

Having too many people on a ladder of other access equipment can make it unstable. Never risk exceeding the maximum load, and that includes any equipment that you need to have with you. If you feel unsafe at any time then lower yourself down and come off of the equipment.

Be extra cautious at night

If you’re completing work at night or when visibility is less clear, always reassess the area before you begin. Working at night can leave you exposed to many risks, but if you decide to go ahead anyway, never work alone - if you hurt yourself you won’t be able to call for help and this ould put you in a very dangerous situation.
