Early Instances
Among the earliest examples of scaffolding techniques are those adopted by ancient Greek civilisations. Construction techniques involving wooden scaffolding have been dated back as far as the 5th century BC.
Additionally, historical archives suggest that the great pyramids of egypt utilised similar methods; large wooden structures were bound together, enabling work to be carried out at great heights.
Of course, these methods were still a world away from those utilised today; the first real developments were yet to come.
Ancient China
As mentioned above, early wooden scaffolding was rather different to the steel poles used now. That said, it was in ancient China that the first instances of bamboo scaffolding were recorded. This technique is not dissimilar to that used in modern construction, with rope tying together the poles in a manner akin to modern scaffolding fittings.
Modern Beginnings
Following the development of bamboo scaffolding, techniques remained reasonably primitive up until the 20th century. However, as steel tubing became readily available, a cost effective alternative to old methods was developed.
The introduction of standardised modular components meant that scaffolding projects were safer, more efficient and easily replicable.
Scaffolding Now
It’s safe to say that scaffolding has come a long way since the days of ancient Egyptian and Greek civilisations. Many aspects of modern scaffolding became widespread in the aftermath of the second world war as cities and towns were rebuilt.
Today, scaffolding techniques and safety precautions are far more advanced; steel tubing is widely replaced by lightweight aluminium and pre-constructed telescopic scaffold towers are increasingly common on construction sites.
