Falling from a height is the most common workplace injury for construction and trades businesses. Often treated as an afterthought, ladders can be used in a much safer way than their stock variation. By purchasing some relatively low-cost extras, you can dramatically improve your ladder safety and potentially save lives in the future.
From ladder pads to solid rubber feet, here are four great low-cost accessories that can be added to your ladder to improve its safety:
Ladder Stopper
Ladder Stoppers provide a lip that you can place the bottom of your ladder against which reduces the chance of any movement at the foot of the ladder. Because the lip is integrated into a large surface-area bottom pad, there is greater contact between the ladder and the ground. Not only does this limit the chance of an accident occurring but it also decreases the wear of the bottom of your ladder. It also decreases the amount of noise the bottom of your ladder makes.
Ladder Stay-With V
The Ladder Stay-With V is a very simple frame that can be added near the top of your ladder. It has two feet pads that can be placed against a wall so you can work at a distance from the wall which is useful when painting. It has a V shape in the middle of the frame which allows the ladder to be placed against corners and downpipes which increases the usability of your ladder.
Ladder Pads
Ladder pads are rubber polyurethane pads that are pushed onto the top of your ladder and they have two purposes. Firstly, they improve the stability of the top of your ladder by improving its grip to the wall, reducing any sideways movements. They secondly protect the wall surface from being damaged by metal ladders as they prevent scratches, chipping and dents.
Solid Rubber Feet
Ladder Solid Rubber Feet are an excellent way to improve the safety of your ladder. Providing a larger surface area to contact the ground with, and this being rubber rather than metal, increases the stability of the ladder. They come with nut and bolt fixings that are used to permanently secure the feet to the ladder. Just make sure that the longer upright plate is on the outside of the ladder and be warned that the space between the two uprights is 30mm so you’ll want to check for compatibility before you buy a pair.
