Steps and ladders are essential pieces of equipment for many tradespeople so ensuring that you have one with you at all times is essential. However, ladders can be big and bulky which can make transporting from A to B a little more difficult, so what’s the solution?
Read on to learn some top tips on how to transport your steps and ladders safely.
Invest in a roof rack
Standard ladders can be fut in the back of your van, however, bigger equipment such as extension ladders can’t always be squeezed into the back. Alternatively, a roof rack allows you to safely load the ladder and easily unload it when needed - this also means you have more space in the back of your van.
Understand the overhang limits
One thing to consider when using a roof rack is the overhang limits as there are regulations that you need to follow. It is essential that you secure ladders adequately to avoid accidents when driving such as the ladder falling off into the road. The limits are as follows:
Rear Overhang Limits
- If the overhand is less than 1 metre, then there are no requirements.
- For overhangs that are 1 to 2 metres long they must be visible. Using a hi-vis cover will ensure that’s it’s clearly seen withhin a reasonable distance to other road users.
- If the overhang is between 2 and 3.05 metres, you are required to have a rear marker board and over 3.05 metres requires 2 days notice to be given to the police.
Front Overhang Limits
- If the overhang is between 0 and 2 metres, there are no requirements.
- Hangovers between 2 and 3.05 metres need a front and side marker board.
- Again, hangovers that exceed 3.05 metres need to be reported to the police with 2 working days' notice.
Protect your van
- Before driving off, always make sure your ladder is properly secured.
- If you don't have a roof rack, place something between the ladder and the roof to avoid damage such as scratch to your vehicle’s paint job.
- When taking the ladder down and into your workpace, make sure you have a clear pathway that’s free from obstructions.
